The lavatory lens: Tracking the global movement of pathogens via aircraft wastewater
August 2023

Herein, we review the potential of aircraft wastewater for public health surveillance.Aircraft wastewater surveillance can also be integrated with network and infectious disease models to better target traditional public health control measures during epidemic onset. Given the demonstrated potential for public good and the tremendous economic costs of epidemics, governments should consider international collaboration and investment to create a global aircraft wastewater surveillance system.

Passive sampling to scale wastewater surveillance of infectious disease: Lessons learned from COVID-19
April 2022

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, passive sampling is re-emerging as a promising technique to monitor SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater. Herein, we briefly review the history of wastewater passive sampling, recent applications during the COVID-19 pandemic, including comparisons between passive, grab, and composite sampling, along with the potential benefits and constraints of passive sampling workflows.
